How Does P2P Energy Trading Work — Step by Step

How Does P2P Energy Trading Work — Step by Step

  1. Onboarding

    1. Prosumers & Consumers register with approved P2P platforms and the local DISCOM (links above)
    2. Participants receive a Verified Credential (VC) — a digital identity confirming eligibility for P2P.

  2. Listing & Discovery

    1. The prosumer lists surplus solar energy units on the digital platform via a web/mobile app.
    2. Buyers search for offers or set preferences (e.g., cheapest, nearest, green energy).

  3. Price Discovery & Offer Placement

    1. Buyers (Consumers) discover the offers placed by different sellers and based on desired delivery time, price and quantity, select the offer and place buy order.
    2. The Seller (Prosumer) then receives the offer and can choose accept or reject the offer.

  4. Settlement

    1. Based on the intent by Buyer and Seller a Trade Order is created by Trading Platform and shared to DISCOMs for settlement.
    2. The DISCOMs verify the actual energy delivered by Seller and actual energy energy consumed by buyer during the contract period.

  5. Payments

    1. Based on the verification by DISCOM, trading platform facilitate transfer of payment from Buyer to Seller account.
    2. The Units purchased and sold are recorded by DISCOM and adjusted in the actual electricity bills of both buyer (Credited) and Seller (Debited).

This process can feel like buying and selling commodities — but for electricity — and often with real-time settlement based on smart meter data.
